“Skill” gets used loosely across the AI agent space. Here's what it actually means, why the distinction matters if you're considering AI for your business, and where to go if you want to see the ecosystem of skills people are building.
Three terms worth keeping straight
Skill
A packaged, reusable set of instructions an agent loads for one specific job — writing a commit message, filing an expense, walking a customer through a return. Narrow on purpose, so the agent does that one job well instead of okay at everything.
Tool
The thing a skill actually calls to get work done — a database query, an API, a file write. A skill is the judgment about when and how to use a tool; the tool is the hands.
Agent
The layer that decides which skill applies to the situation in front of it, then runs it. One agent might hold dozens of skills and pick between them the way a person reaches for the right tool in a shop.
Why it matters
Skills, not platforms
You don't need a platform
Most off-the-shelf AI tools are built for everyone, which means they're built for no one in particular. A skill built around your actual workflow — your catalog, your intake form, your ticketing system — does the one thing you need instead of forty things you don't.
Skills compose
A good skill is small enough to combine with others. An agent that can check inventory, draft a follow-up email, and update a spreadsheet isn't one big program — it's three narrow skills an agent reaches for in sequence.
